Event Details

While originally designed for alternative education teachers, this book study is appropriate for anyone working with students who live in poverty.  Eric Jensen is a former teacher who has taken his interest in educational neuroscience, connected it to research, and now offers practical classroom applications.

From Eric Jensen's book, Teaching With Poverty in Mind:

In this book, I aim to provide more than a framework. I give you the theory, the research, and the strategies to ensure success at your school. What I do not aim to provide is an exhaustive compendium of every idea on reform, every instructional strategy, and every consultant's opinion on cultural differences. This book assumes you already know that leadership counts, that a healthy environment is crucial, that you should use effective pedagogy, that school safety is number one, and so on. Here you'll learn about what will give you an edge. Think of this book as a spotlight focusing attention on what matters most. I hope that the strategies offered in this book, distilled from my own experience and research, will provide an inspiring and practical guide for improving the lives of your own students.

Participants will read the book and over five three-hour meetings, engage in meaningful activites and discussions based on the reading.   Led by GVWP teacher consultants, Tim Buchanan and Sally Hale, this high energy group will meet at Calla High School, Thursday, January 26, from 4:00 to 7:00, through February 23.

Cost: $50.00 + $25.00 materials fee.  ($50 will be refunded to teachers from Manteca, Ripon, Tracy, one.Program, and other schools in south San Joaquin county, as long as the teachers complete the course requirements!  One unit of extended education credit is available from CSU Stanislaus for $40.00.

For more information, contact Sally Hale at tommydanger@mac.com.
